Hello World. Once Again!!!

Hello World...

How much water has flown under the bridge.

Malayalam Film Industry has still not taken lessons from Australian Cricket Team(?) Some of those meesha mulkatha payyans when I started this blog are big stars in Malayalam film industry now. Something like below

Doordashan Nostalgia was again evoked strongly by films like 1983

Stock options helped in making some money and NC owns houses and lives a settled happy life with friends and foes.

I miss Mumbai as well and is very much settled in a South Indian city

Most of the friends who gave the Max Shady Arbit Fundaes are settled (un) happily  in life is what it seems from outside marketing.

After analysing Scenes from Malayali Christian Marriages, I have decided that there is no differentiation and scenes remain almost the same.

NCs hair is still black while everyone else has turned grey or white.

Time to get back. What do you think?

India wins World Cup - Where Were You When? Moment in life

Cherish the moments for they too, become memories.

Few moments that became where were you when? memories

911 terrorist attack, 2001
Rajiv Gandhis Assasination . 1991
Sachin scoring 200 in ODIs, 2010
Babri Masjid demolition, 1992

&

India winning Cricket World Cup, 2011

Of such moments are personal histories built.

It’s not exact science, this “where were you when?” stuff. But it is unique to each of us, the memories we take with us and those we leave behind.

Any orphanages looking for support in Kerala ?

One of my friends runs a tour company which offers holidays in Kerala along with Volunteering Vacation Opportunities for foreigners. One of their guests is looking for an orphanage that can be supported financially and operationally. The relevant part of the request below

We set up and run volunteer programs in partnership with and support of local organisations and are currently seeking a partner organization that operates a well run and organized orphanage in India (Kochi) whom we can support to help expand and improve their operation. We have a funding package available to support an orphanage that would benefit from the supply of additional skilled personnel, trained volunteers, and funding. We would supply experienced long term staff, funds to cover each volunteer and additional funding to supply project equipment and materials for the projects the volunteers were assisting with. There may also be additional fundraising opportunities though our charitable trust. We are only interested in organization or institutions that have long term aims, have already achieved successes in their aims, are looking to expand their work and are looking for a partnership of 5 years minimum. Volunteer projects may include childcare, basic education, construction, sports and others.

Kindly mail them at INFO AT IRISHOLIDAYS.COM if anyone knows about any well run orphanage in Kerala that deserves operational and financial support.

One year from our wedding

Not exactly an Ooh La La La but not at all an Oopz, Ooh, No La La la at all sums up my first year of wedding. Few lessons for all those mallu bachelors out there who may or may not want to tie the knot when they want to.

#1) Select a {NICE} father in law who is willing to share a "small" with you ;). You don't have to take the approval of your wife each time you want to have a small. I was very clear on this as I wrote here ;P. Very essential for a successful married life for a {NICE} mallu Xian son in law :P.

#2)When your family decides to give an advertisement in any newspaper please make sure that you are in the loop. Else you will get calls from long lost girl friends who never talked to you in life before asking whether you were the guy in the ad mentioned :P with a proposal for a relative from their family.

#3)Be prepared to discuss possibilities like Losing the ring , The ring not fitting, Food poisoning from the catering, The bride not showing up, The groom not showing up, Rips and stains in the bridal dress, The bride gaining too much weight and the gown not fitting and so on with the elders of your family who would have never considered you an equal before. This is a dream coming true for a Mallu MBA with endless scenarios and symptoms while analysing an MBA case in a class.

#4)Nothing will go according to the plan in first year. After fixing the engagement my boss quit the next day and some one who was a half crack took over as the new boss, then when we were honeymooning in a phoren land Lehman brothers collapsed and all the hell broke lose, people were fired LRC and my wife could not get a job. I was planning to shift to Bangalore with three offers in hand and all offers were taken back on the same day. Be ready for all these bad things and nice things like communists losing power. You need to face all these with the added responsibility after wedding and be ready for the worst.

#5)You need to define the division of labour really clearly after wedding and define a policy to maintain family peace. You need to get clear understanding with your wife that you will define the stand on India- Pakistan policy of your house while she will do the rest. This will help in averting calamities, disasters and tsunamis.

#6) Mumbai was Monster muse, part witch, part clown, always absurd, often charming - my rogue ballad; It was Mumbai meri jaan. Mumbai is generally and basically very bad for Mallu Xian couples.

#7)When making a choice between two options, only consider what's going to happen in the future, not which investments you've made in the past. The past investments are over, lost, gone forever. They are irrelevant to the future. Do a read up on Sunk Cost before marriage to avoid any conflicts around decision making - I think married men who read this post will agree with me.

#8)No moment is as precious as holding your first born for the first time. Ten fingers, Ten toes. She's laughter and teardrops. So small and brand new & amazingly angelic. A new baby is like the beginning of all things-wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities :P

Moi cents from first year. Have got few more cents on matrimony search which I didn't get time to update after wedding.

All the Best Bachelors with your search !!!!!!!!!!!

and if you like this post RATE IT.

This is a bonus tip. Once in a while appreciate your better half so that both of you can live a peaceful marriage in bliss ;). If you are a peace loving guy like me I think you will rate this post :P.

What is in a "Gandhi" name?

Juliet:

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."
Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)

Juliet told Romeo that name is an artificial and meaningless convention according to Shakespeare.

It is not so.

The new Bandra- Worli Sea link in named after Rajiv Gandhi
The famous Connaught Place in Delhi was renamed as Rajiv Chowk.
The stadium in Kochi (May be the only international stadium in the world) is named as Jawaharlal Nehru "International" Stadium.

Every district in this country has one thing or the other thing named after someone from the "Gandhi" family.

Giving a "Gandhi" name to each and every thing in this country- Does it imply that no other families did anything during the freedom struggle or are not doing anything now for this country?

മലയാളസിനിമയുടെ സ്വന്തം ലോഹിക്ക് ആദരാഞ്ജലികള്‍

For all those who loved and still love Malayalam Cinema, Lohi's death is the lose of one of the finest scripwriters/directors Malayalam Cinema has ever seen.

One of those writers who created cinemas with the soul for Malayalam movie lovers.

Cinemas with characters
who could find a place in the mind of an average Malayalam film lover.

I knew him only through his characters.

His characters were from middle class with dreams of a common man (Mammootty in Amaram, Thilakan in Kireedom).

Characters who got confused in the roads of life and never could understand where life is taking them (Kireedom, Chenkol, Sallapam, Thoovalkottaram, Veendum Chila Veetukaryangal, Amaram, Thaniyavarthanam)

Somehow most of us who love Malayalam Cinema could relate to his characters because they were like so many others whom we had met at differenet points of life.

No wonder most of these characters are still etched in the minds of an average Malayalam Cinema lover like you and me.

Kamala Das -മലയാളത്തിന്റെ നീര്‍മാതളത്തിന് എന്റെ ആദരാഞ്ജലികള്‍

Kamala Das -

I always admired this woman.

I know her only through her Books - English and Malayalam - from "Ente Katha" to "Neermathalam Poothakalam" which I used to satisfy my reading appetite in school days.

The only woman who could sit in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and write "Wild feet stirring up the dust in my home in Malabar and I so far away"

The only woman author who had the courage to write about sex in Malayalam. The irony being that much of her writing about sex is about how disappointing she found it eventhough most of her works were sensuous and mildly erotic.

The only woman who had the courage to describe making love with her husband as ‘a marital chore’ she endured every night from the age of 15.

The only woman who encouraged her husband to take another lover: someone unlike her, someone who was good in bed and was proud about the same in her writings.

The only woman writer in Malayalam who was unpretentious and genuine and was a true feminist who thought feminism was about breaking the shackles of women in the society and was not about imitating men.

The only woman who had the courage to write poetry with out inhibitions and take on a society and intelligensia in Kerala which had very powerful inhibitions.

She inspired me simply because she chose to fight against abuse from suffocation in her own way than by fighting those abuses and shackles by violating the same.

Sad to know that she too has passed away..

Communism is not "Future is Bright"- LDF routed in Kerala

In a place called Malluland there lived a donkey and a washerman.Donkeys in Malluland were are known to be lazy , but washerman's Donkey was very hardworking . It worked from dawn till dusk religiously for the washerman. All other Donkeys hardly worked and were lazy and most of them in Malluland played from morning till evening. Most of them wondered why our Donkey is working so hard even after repeated invites to come and play with them and be lazy. They invited him to live and play with them leaving the washerman . Eveytime they invited him , he replied

" The future is bright" .

Eachtime they adviced him to leave washerman and come and play with them , he replied

"The future is bright".

Once a new baby Donkey came to Malluland and he was surprised to see a donkey who was working so hard . He wanted to know the reason. Each time he replied " The future is bright". Baby donkey became very curious and kept on asking our donkey about : Th Future is Bright". After sometime our donkey refused to speak to the baby donkey anymore. However Baby Donkey pestered our donkey day and night so much that it became unbearable .He dreaded the sight of baby donkey .Each time Baby Donkey wanted to know why the future is bright . At last our donkey could not bear it anymore . One day the baby donkey was pestering him too much and he became tired of replying to him each time ,

" The future is bright" .

One fine day in an all donkey function when he became so tired of replying to the baby donkey " The future is bright" , he called him apart from the group of donkeys and said .

" You know , The washerman has a beautiful daughter. Whenever she does something naughty, he scolds her and tell her that , I will get you married to this donkey if you become more naughty. I am waiting for her to do something really naughty so that I can marry that beauftiful girl . The future is bright" .

Seth Godin may have agreed with this donkey and would have appreciated him for ignoring sunk costs.

Communists in Kerala (not Bengal or India ) are like this Donkey. They are out of touch with the ground realities and situations in the outside world , living like a frog in the well , who don't care what happens outside the well and the surprising fact is that they have been like this for ages.

In 1970s , when agriculture in the entire country was becoming mechanised , communists in Kerala opposed tractors . Their reason being that laboureres will become jobless . They never had the foresight to see about the increased produtivity in farms and increased production . They never knew how it was being used in the Communist countries like Soviet Union in all their communes to increasse food production.Told you that they were like frog in the well.

In 1980s, Computers became " devil's agents" for the communists in Kerala as they viewed it as the ploy of CIA to deviate the brains of Indian (rather Mallu) intelligentia .The ideological opposition to high technology of the Communist Marxist Party, which for long fought against computerization of the workplace, believing it would reduce jobs, caused the state to go back in reverse gear at full speed when everyone else was accelerating in fourth gear in the Information Super Higway. A partial reason for why so many Malayalis (may be you too) had to work in software firms outside the state.

In 1990s , Commuinsts opposed liberalisation and MTV culture for attracting the predatory American giants, and urged people to 'oppose such measures which mortgage our economy and culture to foreign interests'. The same party started a channel later in Kerala to propogate its political interests and it owns and operates an amusement park . It also owns large investments of real estate in various parts of the state and may come second only to church. Whoever said Communists can't be capitalists hasn't heard about the Kerala Communists?

Kerala, which voted in the world's first elected communist government in 1957, ushered in a social revolution in India through land and educational reforms in the tiny state. However, the communists came a long way forward from the peasent revolution and subsequent communist rulers tended to see anything new as a threat to workers hampering their struggle against the bourgeoisie . The history of the Left in Kerala is a history of what might have been, of opportunities lost as increasingly powerful revolutionary forces were suffocated by dictates from Moscow and Delhi.

Classical Communism & Marxism postulates that when an idea ( Karl Marx calls it thesis) clashes with an opposing ideal ( the anti-thesis) , what emerges is not the victory of one over the other , but a synthesis which combines the best of the both world views. This synthesis is the result of class struggles ; but over time , this becomes a new thesis , clashes again with the anti thesis to form new synthesis. This process carries itself till a perfect society , the so called Marxist - Utopia, emerges and Left - Wing Scholars from the monolithic red front in Kerala say that, Kerala is far far away from this (supposedly) ideal state of existence and as a result the class struggle against the bourgeoisie have to carry on. But what happens when the struggle is not allowed to take place and everything is suppressed.Anybody who has watched the communist parties will know how CPM systematically cleansed out any source of opposition either using brute force or character assassination ? Ask to M V Raghavan or K R Gowriamma , the veteran leaders who were thrown out of the party and may be the current Chief Minister V S Achutanandan is also on the same way.

Comrade Achuthanandan believes that drinking products that has its headquarters in USA, which is a byword for ‘MNC imperialism’ will hamper health and well being of his people . When he says this through his limited list of English words through national channels the laughter that emanates from other state capitals echoes through out India and reminds me of the Donkey who says that " The future is bright".

The cola ban was ridiculous not because of the fact that it was done without proper studies based on a study done only by CSE headed by the extremely articulate Sunita Narain who proclaims that anybody who drinks colas is quaffing 25 times the permissible amount of DDT, lindane, malathion, chlorpyritos and other toxins that sound like ingredients of a nuclear bomb but because of the fact that if people still prefer to drink poisonous Coca-cola and Pepsi it is their choice and the government has no role to play in this which Comrade Achu did not realise.

Comrades, why dont you ban all the drinks and order pure drinking water for all of us?

Were Coca-Cola and Pepsi breaking any laws when they gathered ground water , the same ground water that goes into our stomach when farmers in Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu gather ground water for growing high-yielding crops that require vast amounts of water. In both cases, the cost of groundwater is practically nil — the costs being in , transporting and marketing the water. In other words, in India where there is a scarcity in many areas, there is no policy for water withdrawal and what India needs is a policy on from where and on what state ground water can be drawn and not ban on colas to fight against the "imperialsim of multinationals'.

An action like this taken against any company or its products on the basis of any non-governmental organisation’s (NGO) or any other body’s report without taking recourse to a proper regulatory process is ridiulous .CSE has been harping about Cola ban for a long time but have you heard of anybody dying because of consuming colas .Though colas are widely consumed ,there has not been a single case of poisoned death owing to drinking Coca-cola and Pepsi, anywhere in the world. It is true that lots of Coke bottles have been found with extraneous matters with in the bottle and there are pesticide allegations .

However people have died and still die in Kerala because of consuming illicit arrack and endo sulphan attacks and not colas ? Dying people can be a more stronger evidence for banning a drink rather than some gossamer evidence of CSE . Why Comrade Achu is not banning Arrack and liqour is anybody's guess ? It will affect the Communist Vote bank .

Report from CSE in fact says the same thing about all the drinks like Mirinda , 7 Up ,Sprite and all the drinks that come from the Cola companies and the ban is only on Cocacola and Pepsi which shows that comrade Achu wants to be known as the knight in shining armour who is fighting for the age old and almost extinct communist marxist principles. Communists in Kerala had to think a little bit more construcively than giving strike calls and bandhs and destroying private and public property.

Two faces of the same coin .

In Bengal the long-ruling 'Marxist' state government brutally demonstrated its determination to make the state seem attractive to foreign investors by clearing the hawkers off the pavements of the main commercial districts and taking proactive measures to invite IT firms and FDI. May be one of the reasons because of which they were defeated this time.

In Kerala we have a "Communist" government which tries to jeopardise the IT and FDI boom through whatever means, be it opposition to Smartcity or Cola ban. They live in that age of land reforms when ENIAC was the best computer in the world.

Somehow when communism evolved in Kerala, the Kerala commies belived that the idealogy of communism is about opposing everything that (they felt) was American including colas d computers .The presnet crop of communists are not as pragmatic as their previous generation comarades who were able to usher in social changes by using communism as a tool. The current lot have failed to realise the two stage theory that the bourgeoisie revolution had to be completed before proletarian revolution could begin is not happening in India.Communism had to accommodate themselves more and more to bourgeoisie parties allowing marxism to be postponed to an indefinite future. They never got tired of arguing that privatisation per se will benefit the capitalists at the expense of the ordinary workers without seeing the larger benefit to the society and the employment opportunities that is being created for the youth. A reason due to which people like you and me have to come and work outside our state.

Peripheral measures like banning Cocacola only hampered the long term interest of the state which was already being percieved as the most militant and unionised state where three strikes happen in five days. Comrade Achu , you may have scored a point in front of your fellow communists by embracing the ancient and outdated communist marxist ideals through Cola ban in your fight against imperisalism based on some filmsy evidence , but haven't you hurt the interest of the state and the country at large?

Politics in Kerala (not only commies) is full of bald heads and grey hairs like K N M Pillai who are opportunistic and goes to any extent to fulfill their political ambitions.

K N M Pillai is a character in Arundhati Roy's ' The God of Small Things'. An ageing communist in the village Ayemenem who names his son Lenin and who instigate a mini revolt in Paradise Pickles when Velutha is killed by Police . When I see any Kerala politician on the screen a comparison with comrade K N M Pillai brings out the quintessential {mis}qualifications in Kerala Political scene which boils down into opposition to anything that the other front preaches with out analysing whether it benefits the state and homogenisation of the development in the state on a few issues. It is also the personal attacks on the opposition with claps from media and common man by conviniently forgetting more critical issues the state is facing .

E M S namboodiripad , the flamboyant Brahmin high priest of marxism in Kerala who became the chief minister of first elected communist government in the world would have been surprised to see the single homogenised view of the development that is being aired by various television channels voiced by the politicians from the two fronts alike in the umpteen news shows. The worst part is that people in the state are not getting an antithesis or an opposing views when the media is publishing the same with an ardent fan's unquestioning approval. When so many people went to Kerala politicians chorused Make-Kerala-a-Dubai line and now it is almost like Make - Kerala- A -Bangalore line . May be another bangalore in which High tech cohabits with low efficiency in a deepening urban nightmare having pothole filled roads , endless traffic jams , concrete jungles and low indicators of life expectancy.

It has been proven that small dispensaries in lot of places is much more effective than a huge hospital in one city in the state and when the debate about development concentrate on a single project called smart city(which still hasn't progressed other than the foundation stone) which may bring in 20000 job opportunities(both technical and non technical) in the state media conviniently forget that there are different ways of doing the same thing providing more benefits. When media focus on DIC(K)and PDP like parties with out focusing on the real issues like development and a better life for the people in the state, it is imperative that a simple question like what is development is being forgotten?. In a state like Kerala most channels and other media vehicles always forget the thin line between entertainment and news when they report any issue.

Good governance and development is not only about technology , engineering and IT but it is also about developing human condition as a whole in the region . It is not only about providing jobs , but also about developing infrastructure and protecting natural resources. It is as much about preventing the suicides of farmers and jailing those ministers who were accused in sex scandals .Some young heads with black hair should replace the bald heads and grey hairs in Kerala at the helm to convince the same to the junta and agnise them that most of the other states are marching ahead.

Commies, Please dont tell us like the stupid donkey that the "Future is Bright". We heard it from SFI when we were studying, from DYFI when we were searching for jobs and now we are tired of it. We are tired of the hartals, bandhs and the shallow communism that you preach and practice. We are tired of the arrogant, high handed and immature leaders that lead your party in the state. Immature leaders who make dog remarks and #@$$@ stetments. We are not bothered whether you tie up with PDP, DIC or XYZ- If you want votes at least in the next election, Please create jobs in our own state and allow us to lead a peaceful ife.

ജുഹുവിലെ സന്ധ്യ - Nothing Much has Changed

This is a small part from the book "യാത്രസ്മരണകള്‍" written by the renowned Malayalam writer S. K. Pottekad.

Nothing Much has changed in Mumbai. We can see the same scenes minus Europeans even if we go to Juhu today.

Often I wonder, Why Mumbai has this MaMaKu (Mangalam Manorama Kunkumam) Image in Kerala . Mumbai is often seen as a place of underworld , murders , slums , riots , hardships and a place where mallus who could not reach Gulf commit suicide because of financial difficulties. Invariably in most of the malayali movies and serials the villains are from Mumbai, have some connections with Mumbai.

Living in Mumbai is not like any other city . It is a life altering experience. Engulfed in a sea of humanity that is struggling to survive, you need to flow with the tide in this city.It is one of those cities in India that definitely doesn't try and hide its imperfections.

Mumbai was also good like most of other cities. But it is time to move on.
I hate and love the local trains, I love the auto rickshaws & taxis because they dont overcharge, I love the rains on Marine drive during monsoons. I love the varieties of food and cuisine available at umpteen resturants and small hotels in Mumbai. I love lot of things about this place but I hate as much things about this place.

I am moving to the best city in India to live in.

PS: I lived for two years in Delhi and saw some bomb blasts when I ventured out on a peaceful day to Sarojini Nagar market. Then I moved to Noida and one day came to know that some bloke who was staying two lanes away killed 20 odd children. Then I came to Mumbai and hmm cant descibe the horror that occurred on 26/11. Wonder what will happen next?

Susan Boyle - A star is born at 47 (?)

I hate all reality shows from Ideal star singer to Dance India Dance to Indian Idol to American Idol. But Susan Boyle- She was someone so different but yet so refreshing, that too at the age of 47.

Have you heard bout Susan Boyle? If not , then it in high time to take a break from your hectic schedule when you are busy converting oxygen to carbon di oxide every second.

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high,
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid
When dreams were made and used,
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung,
No wine untasted.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
As they turn your dreams to shame.

And still I dream he'll come to me
And we will live our lives together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms
We cannot weather...

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seems
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.

As CNN writes - "But there's something else Susan Boyle awakens in us as we watch her come out of her shell: our own selves. Who among us does not move through life with the hidden sense, maybe even quiet desperation, that we are destined for more? That underneath our ordinary exterior lays an extraordinary soul? That given the right opportunity, the right stage, the right audience, we would shine as the stars we truly are?"

From " In Harihar Nagar" to "To Harihar Nagar"- missing those Malayalam movie dialogues

I saw "To Harihar Nagar". Do not expect that "To Harihar Nagar" will exceed all the expectations, but it won’t let you down also. It is one of those films for which you can go with your family and everyone will be satisfied.

In this sequel the four men Mahadevan (Mukesh), Govindan Kutty (Siddique), Appukkuttan (Jagadeesh) - all married and Thomas Kutty (about to tie the knot) looks more polished and sophisticated. The standard of comedy is not better but it does not disappoint considering the recent standard of comedy in Malayalam movies.

I have watched "In Harihar Nagar" more than
hundred times, thanks to the repeated telecast by umpteen Malayalam channels. Each time the humour never seems to be boring or enough.and I am struck by the simplicity of the film, and the characters who seems to be from a middle class family like most Malayali families. The dexterous script which d a nice intertwined humor that is so situation specific made the film seem hardly like a comedy.

entha penpillerkku ingane simple dress cheyyunna purushanmare ishtamalle.. dont they like..??

"Eda Oralu Goladicha Golpostil kayari pinneyum pinneyum gola adikkalle"

yea....Kaakka Thoorinna thonnunne....kakkakariyam athinte correct Ka***z evideyanennu...inyenkilum athonnu oori kalayede .

Watch the scene

My Favorite is

Ninte peru ente pattikku. Enittu venam athinte kadi Njan Kollan

Somehow the new Malayalam films does not have memorable funny dialogues like those good old Malayalam films like Nadodikkattu

"Daasa..ithu etha ee alavalathi?"
"I am not alavalathi man. I am pavanayi.
"Sasiyettan Ippo Bharaniyila"
"Angane pavanai shavamayi..enthokke bahulyamayirunnu..malappuram katthi, machine gun, olakkeda moodu."

The other film I saw -"Sagar Elias Jacky"- looks like a Bollywood film made in Malayalam. Jyothirmayee after her first innings in Malayalam has come back shedding the clothes as item dancer. The songs are not good, and resorts, boats, planes all were used which gave a plush luxury feel for the film and I could feel nothing but disconnect with the film, the charcaters and the story. Why does Malayalam film industry make films like this which has FAILURE written in bold all over the story and the script ?

When will we get all those good old Malayalam films with those funny slapstick comedy and funny dialogues back?.

Which is your favorite dialogue from that golden era of Malayalam movies?

Kerala Election Circus- Achu , Umman , PDP , Muslim League, Church Pinne Pavam Njanum

Why is PDP , Church , Nairs and Other Groups important in Kerala Political Circus ?

Cross Posted from an old article in Hindu by one of my favorite election analysts Yogendra Yadav.

Unlike much of north India, elections in Kerala are not about a highly volatile electorate swinging from one pole to another. Every election is about fine-tuning a very delicate balance of social and political forces. Therefore it is first necessary to understand this balance of forces, before getting into how this electoral contest might change the balance and in whose favour.

The main contest in Kerala is between the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) dominated by the CPI (M). Besides the Congress, the UDF includes the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) that commands strong loyalty among the Muslims in the Malabar region in the north and the two factions of the Kerala Congress that have represented the Christian interests. The LDF includes the CPI (M), the CPI, the RSP and a few Left supported Independent candidates in seats where the LDF has historically been weak. Both the alliances expand in the Assembly elections to include other smaller parties, but the line up remains fairly standard for the Lok Sabha elections. Between them, the two coalitions account for about 90 per cent of the total votes in the State, with each of these getting at least 40 per cent or so. That leaves a floating vote of about 10 per cent or less whose swing makes all the difference to the final outcome. Since 1989, the BJP has tried seriously to obtain a toehold in the State and has secured between five to eight per cent votes, but has not succeeded in winning a single Lok Sabha or Assembly seat.

Underlying this familiar and stable bipolar competition is a very carefully worked out and intricate pattern of political and social alliances. As in so many other things, Kerala was ahead of the rest of the country in anticipating political developments. Kerala experimented with seat adjustments and electoral alliances in the 1950s and came to have full-fledged fronts by 1960s. No doubt the State went through two decades of political instability and social turmoil, but this period also saw politics acting as an instrument of social transformation. The UDF and the LDF in its current shape came into being in 1980 and have continued thereafter with minor fine-tuning. The rest of the country is still struggling to learn how to run coalitions in the way they are run in Kerala. While much of the country went through a cycle of national electoral waves, Kerala's elections were very much bound by the State context. The rest of the country followed course in the 1990s as the State became the effective arena of political choice even in the Lok Sabha elections.

But there is one respect in which Kerala is not an exception to the rest of the country's politics. Notwithstanding the high literacy and the political awareness, caste-community identity of the voters in Kerala tells you as much about their voting behaviour as it does in, say, Uttar Pradesh or Bihar. In fact, the entire balance of UDF and the LDF hangs on the caste-community arithmetic. Kerala has two large religious minorities. Christians constitute about 19 per cent of the population, internally divided into several sects and churches. Among the `upper caste' and dominant Syrian Christians, the UDF bags more than three-fourths of the votes, while the other Christians are evenly split between the two fronts. The Muslims constitute about 23 per cent of the State's population and are concentrated in the northern districts of Malabar. The two Lok Sabha constituencies of Manjeri and Ponnani are among the handful of Muslim majority seats in the country. The Muslims too have their caste distinctions but they are more or less united in their disinclination to vote for the communists. The UDF gets anything between two-thirds to three fourths of their vote through its ally, the IUML. Following the demolition of the Babri Masjid, there was an attempt to create an alternative to the established leadership of the IUML, but it failed.

The Left's inability to win the confidence of the two largest minorities, a fact acknowledged by E.M.S. Namboodiripad himself, has meant that the LDF has to gather much of its support from the remaining 60 per cent of the electorate and that its perch is always more precarious than that of its counterpart in West Bengal. Historically, the LDF has drawn its principal support from the backward and Dalit communities among the Hindus that became politically conscious through a series of self-respect movements and were successfully mobilised by the communist movement. The biggest single group here are the Ezhavas, traditionally toddy tappers, who constitute about 22 per cent of the population and about two-thirds of whom vote for the LDF. Other OBC communities and the eight per cent Dalits too extend overwhelming support to the Left. The upper castes, mainly Nayars, constitute about 15 per cent of the population and have generally not favoured the Left. In the recent elections the BJP has drawn much of its vote share from this section of the electorate. That leaves the miniscule Adivasi population, concentrated in the Wayanad hills, whose numbers do not allow it to be a big player in this intense political competition. C. K. Janu, an Adivasi activist, is contesting the elections this time to draw attention to the plight of the Adivasis. It could be argued that the pattern of voting in Kerala is not principally along caste-community lines; there is indeed a strong class pattern to voting for the two alliances on the expected lines: the lower the class, the higher the vote for the LDF. But that is mainly because different caste-communities are placed differently on the class ladder.

This sociology of voting on caste-community lines is a stable and enduring fact of Kerala's political life. In this sense Kerala's electoral landscape is very similar to the voters alignment in many western democracies. This stability enables one to speak of `safe' and `marginal' seats in the State in a way that one does in Britain. This stable alignment has meant that both the Fronts have a stable and secure base to begin with. But this has not meant any complacency in political competition; if anything political competition is more intense in here than most other States in India. Since political competition is for a small proportion of unattached or floating voters and a few marginal seats, a small proportion of votes changing hands can make all the difference. Compared to any other State in India, Kerala is most sensitive to small swings in votes.

Paradoxically, the salience of the caste-community factor in the voting pattern does not result in the salience of caste as a factor in election issues and campaigning. Caste-community patterns merely form a familiar backdrop to electoral competition. The fierce competition for the unattached votes takes place on the basis of issues, national and local. The proportion of floating voters is the highest among the educated upper caste voters and the least among the Dalits. Another complicating factor is that the discerning Kerala voter tends to distinguish between the issues in the national and the State level polls. The UDF therefore always enjoys an edge in the Lok Sabha polls, since it can claim to be a player at the national level in a way that the Left is not.

This time the Congress opened the campaign on a defensive note, for the State unit was involved in unseemly factional fight between the Karunakaran and Antony factions, embarrassing even by Congress' standards. The Congress leadership managed to patch up matters finally by accommodating Mr. Karunakaran's son and daughter. Both of them are in the electoral fray this time: daughter Padmaja is contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Mukundapuram, while his son Muraleedharan is involved in a prestigious Assembly by-poll from the Wadakkancherry constituency. While their performance would reflect on the popularity of Mr. Karunakaran, it seems that the UDF may have saved itself from a major setback in this elections because of this conflict. At any rate the LDF does not seem to be succeeding in making an election issue out of this. The LDF is focussing more on the voters' disaffection with the functioning of the Antony Government that is more than half way through its undistinguished tenure. The Congress is trying to press its natural advantage in a Lok Sabha poll, that it represents a national alternative to the BJP. The LDF is trying to question the Congress' capacity to challenge the BJP in any effective manner.

The BJP is trying hard to open its account in the State and is enthused by the reception that L.K. Advani's Bharat Uday Yatra got in the State. Opinion polls indicate that the BJP may increase its vote share throughout the State and is set to cross its own record vote share of eight per cent in 1998. But it is not clear if the party can convert these into a seat. The BJP has done best in Kasargod and Trivandrum constituencies located at the northern and the southern tips of the State. In the Trivandrum constituency it had managed to secure 20 per cent votes in the last election. The party has put Union Minister O. Rajagopal in this prestigious contest and will be hoping that he will touch 30 per cent, so as to have a real chance of winning the first ever seat for the BJP. While the BJP is known to have transferred its votes to the UDF in some select cases, it is possible that the UDF and the LDF may resort to selective vote transfer to keep the BJP out.

All in all it is a very tough contest as usual. All the seats except Trivandrum and Muvattupuzha are witnessing a direct contest between the UDF and the LDF. Although both the fronts begin with a position of near equality in terms of their tally last time, the dice is loaded against the LDF.

A swing of one percentage point in favour of the UDF can take as many as five seats away from the LDF. A swing of only two percentage points can wipe out all the LDF seats and give them to the UDF. The UDF is also vulnerable to small swings, but is not so precariously placed. A swing of three percentage points will mean a loss of five seats for the UDF, while some of its seats can withstand even a five per cent swing. Only a brave man can forecast a contest as close as this.

I agree completely with the first part of analysis. But the bottom line is CPM won 19 seats from the state in 2004 . This time it is much more interesting with lot of players in the political circus.

Church says this, Madani claims innocence and as poor common junta we should sit back , relax and enjoy the circus.

The competition is still for "The proportion of floating voters is the highest among the educated upper caste voters" . Educated people like you and me and candidates who is in a dilemma like my friend Rajeev Nair.

Rajeev Nair a friend who is an IT professional from Kerala. Like millions of other youngsters from the state , he works outside the state and is planning to vote this time.

But he doesnt know whom to vote for.

He had lot of hopes on smart city .But now he understands that the foundation stone that was laid for smart city is still a stone.nothing else. Some of his friends tell that CPM is already planning to organize a strike when they are going to be in the opposition in the next assembly, which they did effectively when they were in the opposition last time.

Congress as always is busy with in fighting. That too in very innovative ways by burning effigies and all.Only Congress men , that too in Kerala can fight like this.

Elections in Kerala are decided by people like Rajiv Nair, who tries to make the best decision possible based on umpteen parameters.

If you are reading this on this blog , you may also be like Rajiv Nair- An educated upper class youth whose vote may decide the fate of next Kerala Govt-

What will you vote for ?
Development, Caste, Candidate, Party, or something else???

Nepotism - 35 Lakhs released for CM's daughter

Nepotism is the

" showing of favoritism toward relatives based upon that relationship, rather than on an objective evaluation of ability or suitability."

What a great example? CM's daughter - No previous research experience in marine biotechnology. Still she managed to get 35 lakhs for a research project. This happens only in Kerala
